Catching Up

If you knew me in my younger years, you would know I was a little bit of a wild child...with a hippie side...and an activist side.  I spend a lot of time invested in various causes, some of which I think are important today and others, not so much.  However, I was always aware of what was going on, and went to extremes for causes I was emotionally invest in.

One thing I struggle with as an adult is just pure exhaustion in my every day life, and I often don't have time to socialize with advocates and radicals like I did in the past.  Because of that, I feel like I am not well versed in a lot of things I should be. One area I am really not versed in has to do with Israel.

First, I just don't understand how the government works.  I admit, I haven't invested a lot of time researching it but I almost feel like I should be able to pick this up by osmosis.  Nope.  I don't know which groups are left wing or right wing. I don't know which is better there, left wing or right wing.  Is there a moderate?  What are the names of the parties, how are they formed, who is really in charge?  I don't get it!

Another thing (can't believe I am going to admit this publicly), I hear it talked about a lot but I essentially know nothing about J Street.  I know, I know.  How can someone be Jewish and not know this stuff???  How can someone love Israel like me and not know certain things, like how the government works, who the US lobbies are, etc.

So, this is my homework.  Before I make it to Israel in July, I am going to (1) understand how the government works (2) know the views of the key players and whether they are lefties, righties, centeries (3) know who and what I support with regard to the Israeli government and (4) have an opinion on J Street.
